Antonia Pilbeam as a student of dance

Why I started my own dance academy

I love dancing! Especially Ballet. It’s all I ever wanted to do. After injury forced me to give up my place at the Northern Ballet School, I returned to helping my old teacher with classes, while finding a position working in the NHS. In 1990 I started my own school and I try to pass that love of dancing onto my students. Trying to make them understand an inner feeling of movement, getting that sense of achievement, when between us, they managed to grasp or master a certain technique or step. Whether it’s one of the young beginners learning how to point their feet correctly for the first time, or one of the more senior students conquering the intricate details of more advanced steps, it is very rewarding to see them reach their goal.

When a student decides that they want to make dance in some form, either teaching or performing their career, we work together towards reaching that end, through extra private classes which can be enhanced by successful audition, with a grant from the DDA. One of my most recent students to follow that path and graduate from dance college, has just sent exciting news of successfully auditioning for the cruise liners and is off to start her professional career.

The team

I am very fortunate to have a wonderful student teacher, Rebecca, who is a great support to me with my evening classes. And also my mum and dad who help keep things running smoothly ‘behind the scenes’.

I have been dancing since the age of three, and studied with Monica Bannister in Loughborough and Cissie Smith in Nottingham. I also was the founder member of the Leicestershire County School of Dance under Peter Kyle, before continuing later at Northern Ballet School. I started Pilbeam Academy of Dance in 1990 and been teaching ballet at OLCS in Loughborough for 30 years.

Success story

I am so pleased to have just received news that a former student, Liberty Wisehall, is off to Los Angeles to work on the Princess Cruise Liners. She is then onto Australia for 17 months working on the cruise ships cruising between Australia, South Pacific and Asia. Liberty sent a quick note to say “…finally all the years of training have paid off! Thank you for helping me start off my career…”
